In classic Derek Jeter fashion, the captain turns an acrobatic 6-3 double play during the second inning of the Yankees 8-2 victory over the Twins tonight at the Stadium. Bobby Abreu drove in three runs, including a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth, and the Yankees recorded their 5th straight victory. The win also brings their home winning streak to 9. Sex In The City

T1_sexson_allBy no means was Richie Sexson qualified to rake in that $50 million paycheck over four years that the Mariners threw his way. While perennrially, you can trust him to drive in 100 RBI, he’s never had more than 165 hits or batted above .296 in a season. His career homerun total of 305 over 11 seasons is substantially embarassing for a guy with his hieght and strength. And with over 1,3000 strikeouts and a .344 career OBP to his name, it’s become clear that he is not the MVP caliber player he once was. HOWEVA, his arrival in pinstripes is just what the Yankees need.

The Flaw-Star Game

B056ebebbebb462b8e16d45ad01e0365I’m gonna go out on a big lim here and suggest that the title above is probably my worst one yet. Yeah, that sounds about right. But I suppose disasterous games call for absurd headlines. Around te 12th inning, I joked with Barney after Fox showed Bud Selig in a box at the Stadium, that the commish was so exhausted he was ready to call his second tie game. Hey, at least I would’ve gotten some more sleep last night.

Mets-Yankees. Fox Saturday Baseball. Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. Rainy day. Sounds like the perfect time for the Bleacher Creatures first ever running diary. We decided to take a page from the Bill Simmons handbook and record our minute-by-minute thoughts about this afternoon’s game. Here’s what transpired.

Charlie Hustle and MLB Funerals

Peterose
It’s been a busy weekend/week in sport that included two love affairs (not really), sports caskets, Pacman’s new image, and a really, really dirty 2008 Olympics makes for an interesting look at the Summer ahead. I’ll break down what’s been going on in three separate pieces, so hold on.

Time for a Change

Capt7It’s going to be at least another six weeks before Yankees fans will get to see this site of Chien-Ming Wang walking off the bump in the Bronx. Why? Some say he should’ve known how to round the bases at Minute Maid. Others, like myself and Hank Steinbrenner, are in the boat that thinks that the rules of the NL are pointless and archaic.

Welcome Back Bobby!

080303bobbymurcerhmed2phmedium

Longtime New York Yankees broadcaster Bobby Murcer made his first appearance of the season yesterday at Yankee Stadium. The beloved broadcaster will be behind the mic for the first time this season when Chien-Ming Wang and the Bronx Bombers take on the Seattle Mariners at 7:05 pm. Murcer was operated on in December 2006 for incurable brain cancer, and since the surgery, Murcer has been undergoing regular MRI scans every other month. In early March of this year, Murcer had a biopsy at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Murcer says he is “cancer-free” and is excited to be back in the YES Network booth. No doubt Yankees fans are also excited to have Bobby back. The former Yankee player has been calling games on TV and on the radio since the late 1980s. His voice is one that many still connect with Yankees baseball. It’s good to have you back, Bobby!

2008 MLB Previews: NL East

With
the Phillies and Mets being the only true competition in this division,
things will be interesting, because these two teams will not only be
competing for the division championship, but also the final playoff
spot in the NL. The winner obviously clinches their spot, but the loser
could be staying at home watching, as the Mets did last year. With this
rivalry becoming even stronger after the Phils won their first division
championship in 14 seasons, and the Mets collapse, partly in thanks to
three season sweeps by Philadelphia, this season will be an exciting
one at the top of the NL East.
