Big Names and No Game

News out of Bristol today is that the World Wide Leader has added two monstrous names to its NFL analyst lineup for this upcoming post-lockout season. The league’s best wide out and one of its greatest coaches, Jerry Rice and Bill Parcels have joined ESPN’s arsenal of football enthusiasts. I’m just perplexed as to how they are going to fill air time with this many guys. Also, how do the likes of Hugh Douglas and Antonio Pierce feel being relegated to the 1 am NFL Live slot with Mike Hill? Read more of this post

Every so often when trolling the internet for sporting news you find an eye-opening story or “essay” that needs to be shared. So we here at the Creatures decided it would be a good idea to start “Read of the Day” where we share with you what we find to be pertinent and interesting stories that are out there on the interwebs. We do this because we know you have better things to do with your time while we simply don’t. Our first ROTD is currently the headliner on ESPN.com and will be featured in the next issue of ESPN the Magazine. ESPN staff writer Amy K. Nelson and ESPN Mag senior writer Peter Keating joined forces to investigate the potential sign stealing that is going on in Toronto. Really interesting stuff and definitely worth a read. Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Cliff Lee is greeted at home plate by teammate Shane Victornio after blasting a solo home run in the top of the 7th inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The homer ended up being the game winning run, and Lee’s bat wasn’t the only thing making noise in Chavez Ravine last night. The Phillies southpaw went 8 innings and allowed bagel runs on 4 hits while striking out 10. I really couldn’t be happier with having Rex Ryan has the head coach of my beloved New York Jets. The latest gem from the loquacious Ryan spoke out yesterday about veteran Jets DE Shaun Ellis signing with the Patriots:

“”The fact that he chose them … there’s no way I’m going to wish him well. There’s no chance of that. I wish him to be healthy, but I don’t want him to play that well.”

*Disclaimer: I completely agree with what Ryan said. I’m sick and tired of all the bullshit coaches and player feed the media after a veteran player leaves a team: “We’ll miss him…you can’t replace a veteran presence like that…he was such a locker room guy, what a tough loss.” Fuck that. If you play on one team for 11 seasons and then sign with that team’s archrival merely because of a few dollars and cents, then yeah, as Rex said in so many words, “Fuck you!” I have no respect for the decision Shaun Ellis made and I certainly hope he doesn’t succeed in New England. I am a Jets fan through and through and that’s how I was taught to think as a Jets fan. And as a little note to Patriots fans, I wouldn’t see a lot of promise in a 34 year-old defensive end who hasn’t registered more than 10 sacks since 2004. But then again, that’s why they play the games.

Adam Scott celebrates his romping victory at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational with his new full-time caddie and a familiar face to golf fans, Stevie Williams. Scott shot a final round 65 (-5) to win by 4 strokes over a trio of players that included world #1 Luke Donald. But it was Scott’s bagman, Williams, who grabbed all the attention after the tournament when he told spoke to CBS Sports’s David Feherty on the 18th green, saying: “I’ve caddied for 33 years — 145 wins now — and that’s the best win I’ve ever had…It’s the greatest week of my life caddying and I sincerely mean that.” Clearly Williams was lobbing shots at his former boss Tiger Woods who employed Williams for 12 years and won 13 majors with the New Zealander on his bag, but parted with him under disputed circumstances last month. Williams says Tiger fired him over the phone, while Woods’ agent Mark Steinberg says that Woods talked to Williams about making a change in person before the start of the AT&T National in early July. Either way, it’s our belief that Williams should have simply enjoyed yesterday’s victory without saying something unnecessary and controversial. After all, he is a fuckin’ caddie, and lugging a guy’s golf bag around for four days is the closest equivalent to sports servitude as you can get these days. Let the professionals do the talking, Stevie, we really don’t care what you think.

Push It to the Limit

Two notable athletes did some notable pushing and shoving last night, and it caused one of them to end up in jail. Let’s start in Washington Heights where last night Minnesota Timberwolves forward Michael Beasley got into a heated altercation with a fan during a streetball game. Beasley was reppin’ for Team 914, a local Dyckman Park streetball squad who was facing off against Kevin Durant and his Team Nike. Naturally, the park was packed with a standing-room only crowd, with many fans climbing up fences and trees just to get a look at the action. Shit got real in the second half when Beasley started to chirp back at a group of fans who were heckling him. At one point, he was reported to have said “I get paid to do this!” Sick chirp, Mike. Anyways, Beasley decided to take his anger out on noted Dyckman frequenter Garland Quince, and approached Mr. Quince, placed a hand on his head, and shoved him. As Quince so eleqountly described it, “He just mushed me. He mushed me in my face.” Yo, G. Quince you just got mushed hard! The game was delayed for 10 minutes while security restrained a wild Beasley. Not everything went bad for the marijuana smokin’ Timberwolves forward as his team ended up beating KD’s squad 80-77. Guess who’s back swingin’? That’s right, Tiger Woods made his return to professional golf yesterday after a 3 month hiatus. Back in May, Woods withdrew from The Players Championship after only nine holes due to an injury to his knee and Achilles Tendon suffered at The Masters. Speculation has carried on for a couple months now as to when Tiger was going to return, and earlier this week he decided to was ready enough to return to the links at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, an event Woods has won 7 times. He shot an economical 68 yesterday in the first round, good enough to slot him tied for 17th place. His second round begun not an hour ago, and is even through the first 4 holes.

Darren Rovell Should Stick to His Day Job

Generally speaking, I enjoy the work that Darren Rovell does. The former ESPN reporter turned CNBC sports biz guy gives you an interesting take on sports news and provides insight into a part of sports that often gets overlooked. But ever since Rovell got sucked into the Twitter world things have taken a turn for the, well let’s say, odd. His tweets consist of everything from the stupid, weird foods he is eating (what the fuck are General Tso’s nachos?) to pictures of the weird, creepy tattoos that his readers have. But his appearance to sing the National Anthem at this afternoon’s Blue Jays-Rays game has topped all of that other useless shit. Why the Rays would have a reporter sing the National Anthem in the first place is beyond me (apparently Rovell lobbied for himself to do it on Twitter and received offers from a few teams), but what transpired was anything but good. Now, Rovell is no Carl Lewis, it’s hard to top what Carl did, but his performance certainly can’t be described as anything but mediocre. In fact, in my humble opinion, he was better at singing the Canadian national anthem than the Star Spangled Banner. Fuckin communist! In the meantime, Rovell should stop accepting, and lobbying for, these stupid gimmicks and stick to what he does best: tweeting about the most useless shit possible.  Hey, maybe even this article will get an RT from the Sports Biz Guy himself.
