1st and 10

After 132 days, the NFL lockout is finally over. Everyone who thought that Sunday was about to officially become the worst day of the week can exhale. And in related news, Adam Schefter is beginning his 96-hour bender to make sure everyone stays informed of everything that is happening in the NFL world.  Here at the Bleacher Creatures, we have better things to do then deprive ourselves of sleep and BBM all day with our “sources”, but we still want to make sure all our dedicated readers stay informed of what exactly is transpiring in regards to free agency, trades, players being cut, and the like. Barney is here to give you 10 quick updates about all of today’s NFL action.

  • Reports coming out of Seattle indicate that Tarvaris Jackson will be the Seahawks next quarterback. Matt Hasselback will be employed elsewhere come Week 1, and will be courted a few different teams looking for a veteran QB that has playoff experience and a trip to the Super Bowl to boot.
  • According to the one and only Adam Schefter, the Vikings have emailed the Redskins about a possible trade for Donovan McNabb. The former Philly quarterback had a tumultous first season in DC, leading the team to a 6-10 record and being benched in more than one game. All reports indicate that he is ready to get out of the nation’s capital and start anew with a different team. The Vikings are considered the front runner for McNabb’s services at this point. Update: NFL Network’s Jason Jason LaCanfora tweeted, “Vikes and Skins have parameters of a deal for McNabb but agreeing on financial terms with him could be tricky.”
  • Free agent RB DeAngelo Williams, who had two spectacular seasons in 2008 and 2009 before his injury shortened 2010 campaign, will either return to the Panthers or sign on with the Denver Broncos, according to ESPN.com’s Chris Mortensen.
  • Speaking of the Broncos, sources indicate the QB Kyle Orton will be shopped around by Denver in the coming days. Orton has no interest in backing up Tim Tebow, who is expected to be the starter. Reported suitors for Orton are the Titans, Dolphins, Cardinals, and Vikings.
  • The Cowboys cleaned house faster than Thomson Reuters, releasing RB Marion Barber, WR Roy Williams, G Leonard Davis, and T Marc Colombo. The cuts could clear up around $17 million in cap space for the ‘Boys, who may end up making a run at prized free agent Nnamdi Asomugha.
  • Speaking of Asomugha, who is widely considered to be one of the top corner backs in the league and the prize of this year’s free agent class, it appears as though the Texans will move heaven and earth to get the shutdown CB. Some believe that the Texans could be vaulted to the status of Super Bowl contenders if they are able to land Asomugha. But, interestingly, Asomugha may be more attracted to signing on with the NY Jets. Chris Mortensen said on ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike this morning that the All-Pro cornerback might be attracted to the Jets because of his desire to become an actor when his football career is over. The Jets certainly won’t be able to match any offer the Texans make, but expect savvy GM Mike Tannenbaum to do whatever it takes to pitch Asomugha on becoming a member of Gang Green’s already loaded secondary.
  • Another highly coveted defensive FA was locked up in a deal done late this afternoon. DE Charles Johnson, who posted 11.5 sacks with the Carolina Panthers last year, will be returning to Charlotte next season after signing a six-year, $76 million deal with $32 million guaranteed, including a $30 million signing bonus. Cha ching!
  • From re-signing, to, well not re-signing. The Eagles announced today that they would not resign any of their free agents. Not one. The list includes LB Stewart Bradley, S Quintin Mikell, P Sav Rocca, RB Jerome Harrison, CB Dimitri Patterson, C Nick Cole, and G Max Jean-Gilles. Looks like there will be a lot of new faces in Philly this season, and the Eagles are reported to be “loading up and going for it” in free agency.
  • Staying in Philly, QB Kevin Kolb will attract the interest of many QB-needing teams. Entering today, the two front-runners for Mike Vick’s backup were Arizona and Seattle, with Miami and Cleveland as darkhorse candidates. Seattle is probably out due to the fact they already picked up Tarvaris Jackson earlier today, so that leaves the Cardinals as Kolb’s likely destination. The Eagles aren’t giving him up for nothing though, as they believe he has value as Vick’s backup. But now that Seattle is out of the Kolb sweepstakes (the fact that Kevin Kolb is this coveted is still beyond me), the Eagles have lost a lot of leverage and will no longer be able to play the Cardinals and Seahawks off each other.
  • The Carson Palmer ordeal is just weird. Mike Brown may be up for the stupidest GM in sports.
