Jose Reyes and the Curious Case of the Contract Year

A couple of days back into Creature Land and not one baseball post? Blasphemy! I can’t blame the guys or even myself for that though. This is notably the dullest time on the sports calendar with the MLB All-Star game around the corner and the other three pro leagues out of the picture (two indefinitely). No fear though, C-LO’s here to provide a sneak peak into the psyche of one of the game’s biggest question marks.

Lockout City, Part 2

By now everyone and their second cousin knows about the labor situations in both the NFL and NBA. The NFL has been mired in a lockout for 110 days now (although ESPN has made it feel like 110,000 days) and the NBA will most likely be in a lockout by this weekend. Barney is here to breakdown the talks and give you every and all update his trusted sources on the “inside” have given him. *Editor’s Note: Due to length, and the attention span of most of our readers, this post has been broken down into two parts. Part 1: NFL, Part 2: NBA*

Quote of the Day

This entire video is one long quote of the day from the venerable Herman Edwards. Yesterday he addressed the NFL’s newest rookie class and bestowed some words of wisdom. Unfortunately for all of us the phrase “helloooooo??? you play to win the game” wasn’t uttered once. Video after the jump. Read more of this post

Nyjer Morgan just hasn’t figured out to play center field at Yankee Stadium. After badly misplaying a ball two nights ago that led to a first inning outburst by the Yankees, he was at it again last night, botching this Robinson Cano fly ball. Cano recorded a triple on the play, and later went on to score the Yankees first run of the game courtesy of a Nick Swisher single. The Yankees went on to win the ballgame 5-2, and have now won 4 in a row, and 14 of their past 18 games. In related news, the Bronx Bombers reacquired RHP Sergio Mitre from the Brewers for the ubiquitous “cash considerations.” Oh happy day! (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)

Hey Bartender, Put Some Ice in My Drink!

If it hasn’t already, the ice in NHL arenas around the country is bound to start melting as the NHL offseason heats up with the free agency period set to begin Friday. With the NBA seemingly heading towards a lockout, and the NFL mired in an already lengthy lockout of its own, the NHL is the only professional league with a free agency period as of now. And we here at the Creatures are always big fans of the hoopla that surrounds free agents. There may be no “Decision” scheduled, but the NHL offseason has plenty of interesting storylines to keep the casual fan interested. Barney is here to take you through a flurry of recent deals and keep you up to date on all things National Hockey League.

The NFL’s 15th Annual Common Sense Seminar

Everyone who hasn’t been living in a cave John Walker Lindh style for the past few months knows about the NFL lockout. But at the end of the day, the lockout isn’t going to get any more exciting (or boring, depending on how you look at it) until it ends. So, really, who cares about how many days the NFL has been locked out for. Contrary to popular belief (and what ESPN wants you to believe), there are other happenings in the world of the NFL besides the continuing lockout. Sway gives you his take on one of these events in a way only he can.

The Best Show on TV that You Aren’t Watching

July 17th marks the return of television’s finest hour of programming. Just 33 episodes into its existence, AMC’s Breaking Bad has left an indelible footprint in the pantheon of superb cable programming. Creator and show-runner Vince Gilligan’s masterpiece has joined an elite group that includes The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, The Shield, Damages, and Mad Men. This stunning portrait of a simple man gone corrupt to protect his family is both harrowing and terrifying. Perfect TV. Although you shouldn’t need it, here are my 10 reasons to start watching Breaking Bad. Read more of this post

TBC Breaking News: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga upsets Roger Federer in Wimbledon Quarterfinals

In one of the more stunning upsets in recent memory, 12th seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has upset 3rd seed and 6 time Wimbledon Champion Roger Federer 3-6, 6-7 (3-6), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semifinals at The Championships, Wimbledon. Federer jumped out to an early 2 sets to none lead, and looked to be cruising into the semifinals. In fact, Federer had been 178-0 when leading by 2 sets in his career. But Tsonga played steady tennis throughout the rest of the match, breaking Federer 3 times throughout the final 3 sets without being broken himself. In fact Tsonga was only broken once all match, in the first service game he played in the first set. Tsonga moves on to face Novak Djovokic in the semifinals. Djovokic advanced after a tough, four set victory over 18 year-old Bernand Tomic, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

South Carolina second baseman Scott Wingo, right, poses with the National Championship trophy after his Gamecocks defeated the Florida Gators 5-2 to win the College World Series. Wingo, who was named the CWS Most Outstanding Player, drove in two runs in the game and got the ball rolling for South Carolina in a three-run third by hitting a sacrifice fly to give them an early lead. It was the second straight CWS triumph for the Gamecocks, who have now won a record 16 straight NCAA tournament games.
