Truly the Greatest

Congratulations to Michael Phelps on becoming the greatest Olympic champion ever! With a gold medal in the 200m butterfly, which was won in world record time, Phelps captured his tenth career gold medal. He had previously been tied with U.S. runner Carl Lewis, U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz, Soviet gymnast Larissa Latynina, and Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi who each captured nine gold medals during their Olympic careers. But now, he stands alone. And he is only halfway done. Phelps still has a chance to win four more gold medals, and if he does so, he will have won the most gold medals in a single Olympic games in history. Even if he doesn’t accomplish this feat, he will still go down, in my mind at least, as the greatest Olympian in history.

Spitz’s Spite

MarkspitzBefore we touch on the epic nature of this Mr. T during the A-Team years impression Mark Spitz is putting on, so much dap goes out to Barney for his coninued and thourough coverage of these XXIX Olympiad. Dude couldn’t be doing a better job with his "What to Watch For" as well as his analysis of the games (specifically Phelps). Well done sir. On to (ya boy!) Mark Andrew Spitz.

What to Watch For: Day 4

Another day in Beijing. Another TV lineup that surrounds Michael Phelps. Shouldn’t be a surprise by now though. The man is going for history here. Here’s what you can look forward to tonight on NBC’s primetime coverage of the Games of the 29th Olympiad. Phelps can become the greatest Olympic champion in history when he races for possibly his fourth and fifth gold medals of the Beijing Games (tenth and eleventh of his career) in the 200m fly (10:21 PM ET) and 4x200m free relay (11:19 PM ET). Phelps is favored to win both events. The all-time record for career golds is nine, which is currently shared by five athletes including Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis and now Phelps after winning his first three events in China. In the women’s 200m IM (11:12 PM ET), Katie Hoff and Natalie Coughlin of the U.S. compete against a field that includes Australia’s Stephanie Rice and Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry, both of whom recorded sub-Olympic record times in qualifying. The women’s 200m free is also contested, with Katie Hoff being America’s medal hope (10:14 PM ET). And even though they stumbled in the qualifiers, the reigning world champion U.S. women’s gymnastics team, led talented teenagers Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin, face off against formidable China, among others in the women’s team final (10:30 PM ET).

Home plate umpire Bill Hohn throws New York Mets’ manager Jerry Manuel out of the game during the ninth inning of yesterdays Mets-Pirates game. The Mets bullpen yet again faltered as the Pirates scored 3 runs in the top of the ninth to win 7-5. Also take a moment to appreciate the facial hair of Bill Hohn. It’s something to be marveled at.
