What to Watch For: Day 2

In NBC’s primetime coverage, Michael Phelps swims in the men’s 200m free semifinal (10:13 PM ET), where he is heavily favored, and in the men’s 4x100m free relay final (11:26 PM ET), for perhaps his second gold medal in as many days. The Americans have other medal contenders in the women’s 400m free (Baltimore’s Katie Hoff; 11:17 PM ET) and men’s 100m breast (world-record holder Brendan Hansen; ). Also, five-time Olympic medalist Natalie Coughlin swims in the semifinal of her best event, the 100m back (10:03 PM ET). Also, a first look at the U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastics team, led by teens Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin, and the first diving gold medals of the Games (women’s springboard synchro). And if you happened to miss it earlier this morning, the U.S. men’s basketball team looked sharp in a 101-70 victory over host China. Dwayne Wade led the U.S. with 19 points, while Yao Ming paced China with 13. The U.S. faces Angola on Tuesday, while China takes on defending world champion Spain.
