Thought of the Day

There is no doubt in my mind that both Craig Biggio and Frank Thomas are Hall-of-Famers. Anyone who thinks differently has to take a hard look at everything both of these players have done for the league. It is inexcusable to disclude Biggio or Thomas when discussing Cooperstown’s future. Like I said in my "500′s Relevance" column, 500 home runs is not even close to what it once was, but Thomas is a special player who deserves a spot in the Hall. As for Biggio, I see no real argument that can be made against this guy. Biggio is the only player in major league history to have at
least 600 doubles (658), 250 home runs (286), 3,000 hits and 400
stolen bases (413). Those numbers speak for themselves. There is no argument here.

The 2007 NBA Draft Recap

I was plenty distracted last night while watching the NBA Draft because of the deal that my Knicks threw down. In case you missed it, New York acquired Zach Randolph, Dan Dickau, and Fred Jones for Channing Frye and Steve Francis. Just as a side note, I love this deal for the Knicks. Essentially, we dealt Frye for Randolph and got rid of Francis’ lucrative $34 mil. over the next two years. I couldn’t be happier. How can a starting 5 of Marbury, Crawford, D-Lee, Randolph and and Eddy Curry go wrong…we shall see. Alright, back to the subject at hand, the NBA Draft. One of the main topics for argument last night was whether or not this draft class was deeper than the ’03 group that included ‘Bron, Melo and Wade. Stephen A. Smith says no way, Dicky V. begs to differ. This led to a highly comical exchange between the two live last night. Personally, I truly believe that this ’07 group has super high potential. However, I do not think that they will transcend the league quite like the ’03 guys have, Oden and Durant included. Anyway, I’ll get on to my winners and losers from this year’s draft…

500′s Relevance

Less than an hour ago, Toronto Blue Jays veteran Frank Thomas belted his 500th career home run out of the Metro Dome. My question: Is 500 still a relevant number in today’s MLB? This milestone used to signify a first ballot pass into the Hall, without a second thought. But in the era of the hitter, along with all of the other controversy surrounding baseball these days, has Frank Thomas already punched his ticket into Cooperstown with 500 dingers to his name? I personally feel as though he has. Less we forget that the people in charge of inducting new members into the Hall of Fame are the media (chosen baseball writers of America), and Frank has always been a media darling. My feeling is that Frank is a lock for Cooperstown because of his tenure, because of his numbers, and because of his personality. As time goes on though, and more members join the 500 club, the number becomes more and more diminished. Upcoming members (in order) are: A-Rod, Thome, Manny, Shefield, Piazza and Delgado. Those are the closest six to 500. Are they all first balloters? You make the call…

silent. C-LO’s hobbies include talking/writing about sports and watching
TV. He has an invested interest in certain movies and television programs,
most notably: Old School, Space Jam, Superbad, 24, Entourage, The Sopranos, The

main sports are Wiffle Ball, Ultimate Frisbee, and Kickball.

While fellow creature C-LO
tantalizes the readers with his expertise on the NBA and MLB, Barney turns to his bank of knowledge about the NHL to fill up cyberspace and add some
ice to the drink that is the Bleacher Creatures. Besides the NHL, Barney is a
huge fan of both college football and college basketball. Barney also used to be
a fan of both the XFL and NFL Europe, but tragically those sports are has-beens
(That was a joke, not a very good one.) Sticking to his New
York roots, Barney is a fan of the Jets, Yankees, Knicks, Liberty, Titans (indoor
lacrosse is a sport, contrary to popular belief), and is a diehard fan of his
beloved New York Rangers. Besides that, he enjoys watching TV (Entourage, 24, The Office, and
Shaq’s Big Challenge are some of his favorites) and watching movies (Space Jam
is probably his favorite). His favorite song is the Theme from the Pirates of
the Caribbean.

Thought of the Day

Like I said yesterday, I’ve given up on national radio after the Collin Cowherd debacle. So I’ve devoted most of my time during work to listening to the ESPN Radio.com feed of 1050 AM, the local New York station. Today, like most days during the summer, the talk of the town is the Yankees and Mets. On the Stephen A. Smith show, one of Steve’s guys Mike Missanelli made a claim that the reason for the Yanks failure this season comes at the hands of Bobby Abreu. Now, we’ve all heard of Torre’s managerial mistakes, Cashman’s front office blunders (cough Carl Pavano cough), and the overall lack luster attitude of the team. Besides my boy Michael Kay (who dogged Abreu yesterday for laying down a bunt batting in the 3 hole) no one has really taken a stab at Bobby. Following his tragic play in the outfield with Melky Cabrera last night, he seems to be on everyone’s mind. So today, Missanelli stakes a claim that wherever Abreu goes, his team looses. I found this to be a bit of an overstatement, but then I went to the stats. Check this site out. You can venture to the final league standings in every pro sport. Take note of Abreu’s teams. (He was on Houston from ’96-’97, Philly from ’98-’06 and of course the Yankees from the end of ’06 until now). Look at his team’s records. My favorite aspect of this, is how well Houston did the year after Bobby left. It’s unfair to blame the totality of the situation on one guy. But he hasn’t been earning his $15.6 mil this season, enough said. To fix these New York Yankees, many things need to happen, because this team is not making the playoffs right now. I’m sorry, they’re just not. This coming from a real fan. My thoughts if we don’t make it to the post season…fire Torre, fire Cashman and rebuild. The Yankees need a shakeup, and this is where it has to start.
